Australian media slam men's swim relay choke
Australian media on Monday lashed out at their world champion men's 4x100m freestyle relay team's failure to win an Olympic medal, calling it one of the country's greatest swimming disasters.
The Sydney Daily Telegraph lamented a "dark day", with James "Missile" Magnussen, the fastest man in the world this year, singled out after swimming a sluggish first leg.
"Our failure to win a medal in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay is our greatest swimming disaster in a rich history that dates back to Fanny Durack winning gold at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics," it said on its website.
Australia went into the race led by the two quickest 100m swimmers this year in Magnussen and James "Rocket" Roberts, plus former world record holder Eamon Sullivan, and Matt Targett.
They were hot favourites but flopped, finishing outside the medals in fourth behind winners France, the United States and Russia.
"The so-called 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' were the hottest of hot favourites to win the gold medal but all four swimmers swam badly," the Telegraph said, adding that they "bombed out in a big way".
The Sydney Morning Herald screamed "Relay team's final choke" and said the dazed Magnussen's Games were in pieces.
"James Magnussen's Olympic campaign is currently in tatters after the 21-year-old sensation suffered the first major disappointment of his career," it said.
"Australia has only ever seen the confident, bold and freakishly fast James Magnussen.
"On Sunday night at the Olympic pool in London, they saw a shattered man, wandering around in a daze and staring into space. He did not know how to react to defeat."
The Australian broadsheet also focused on Magnussen, saying: "Dud Missile shocks relay teammates".
"A year ago James Magnussen sent shockwaves through the world of swimming, and now he has done it again, but this time he is the one left devastated," the newspaper said.
"Magnussen has been untouchable since he burst on to the scene at the world titles in Shanghai last year, leading the relay team to a gold medal and then backing up to win the world title. But he was all too vulnerable in London."
Magnussen must now refocus for the individual 100m later in the week where he has been widely expected to challenge Brazilian rival Cesar Cielo's world record.

August is Almost Here, Olympics and Sunday's Best | Canadian ...
Where is the summer going? Holy cow, time is flying by and August is almost upon us, you do realize that don?t you? For me this means my French training will hopefully be coming to an end and I will be returning to my office with the correct language profile for my job (all things being equal). ?Given I started in February it hasn?t been that long, but I do look forward to a change of scenery (although I will miss being in downtown Ottawa, a nice place to spend a summer lunchtime).
I am enjoying watching the Olympics, even though it is just the first few days. The Canadian Women?s Basketball team looked great against Russia, and the Women?s Soccer team played well as well, I hope all the Canadian athletes enjoy their Olympic experiences. I watched the feed from RDS, you?ll see stuff like Table Tennis and Judo there as well.
I have slowed down my clean up on the web site, although I have been doing a few things behind the scenes that you shouldn?t be noticing, there will be some changes very soon, depending on how much free time I actually get in August.

Kenya police: Venezuelan envoy killed
NAIROBI, Kenya NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? The acting Venezuelan envoy to Kenya was found dead at her official residence in Nairobi, and police said Friday she was murdered by strangulation.
Nairobi police chief Anthony Kibuchi said that the diplomat killed has been identified as Olga Fonseca Gimenez, the charge d'affaires and acting ambassador of Venezuela in Kenya.
Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Fonseca reported to the Embassy in Nairobi on July 15 to replace Ambassador Gerardo Carillo-Silva.
Venezuela's Foreign Ministry mourned Fonseca's death in a statement, saying she had a "brilliant and committed diplomatic career." It said President Hugo Chavez's government trusts that the criminal investigation by Kenyan authorities will determine what happened and who was responsible.
Kibuchi said investigations into the death had begun and police had questioned two staff members at the residence.
Fonseca arrived in Kenya in July to replace Carrillo-Silva, who had fled the country after three male workers at the ambassador's residence filed a complaint with the police accusing him of sexual harassment, a lawyer representing the workers said.
Ngure Mbugua said he started representing the workers after police did not act against the complaints. He said he pressed Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ask the Venezuelan government to waive the diplomat's immunity against prosecution so that the envoy could be arrested and charged in Kenya or Venezuela.
Mbugua said Carrillo-Silva fled before the process was complete.
He said after her arrival the workers told him that Fonseca demanded that the workers withdraw their sexual abuse complaints against her predecessor.
Mbugua said that on Tuesday Fonseca called for a meeting between him and her lawyer in which she insisted that she would fire the workers who lodged the complaints because of insubordination.
Mbugua said Fonseca's lawyer, Njeri Mucheru-Oyatta, advised her against firing the workers because they have contracts. Fonseca then said she would consult with the foreign ministry in Caracas, Mbugua said.
Mucheru-Oyatta confirmed their meeting and said in the early stages of the investigation it was impossible to tell the motives behind her murder.
Mbugua said the workers he was representing were recording statements with the police over Fonseca's death.

Power and Associates 2012 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study released today, Jaguar ranks second industry wide among nameplates in vehicle appeal and the Range Rover Evoque is most appealing in the Entry Premium Crossover SUV segment. For the second year in a row, Jaguar ranks second out of 34 brands measured in the industry - with the Jaguar XJ scoring as second highest large premium car. Land Rover placed sixth (in a tie) among 34 brands, and the new Range Rover Evoque receives the award for Most Appealing Entry Premium Crossover SUV.
"The J.D. Power and Associates APEAL study simply indicates how much your customers like their vehicles? design, performance and features, and clearly our customers are quite smitten," says Andy Goss, President of Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC. Some shooting victims released from University, Children's hospitals
?Hospitals treating victims from the Century Aurora 16 shooting early Friday released updates on patients who remained hospitalized Monday.
Erika Matich, a spokeswoman for University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, said one of the 23 patients the hospital admitted was released Monday.
Of the nine still being treated, five remain in critical condition, two are in fair condition and two are in good condition.
Children's Hospital of Colorado in Aurora has two adults who are still patients there. One patient was been upgraded from fair to good condition, while the other adult remains in serious condition.
Children's Hospital received six patients. Three have been treated and released, and one person
died.The Medical Center of Aurora received 18 patients and admitted seven. One was discharged Sunday; another was discharged Monday morning. Five patients remain in the hospital, three in the intensive care unit, two of whom are in critical condition.
Swedish Medical Center in Englewood received four victims. Two remained hospitalized in stable condition as of Monday afternoon.
Children's announced Monday it has set up a family support line, 720-777-2300, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to help families impacted by the shooting who need advice or help finding additional resources.
A behavioral health specialist will return calls within 24 hours, the hospital said.

Wet Climate May Have Fueled Mongol Invasion
Beginning in the 13th century, the Mongol Empire spread across Asia and into the Middle East like wildfire, growing into the largest contiguous land empire the world has ever seen.
Historians have long speculated that periods of drought pushed the Mongol hordes to conquer their neighbors, but preliminary new findings suggest that theory may be exactly backward. Instead, consistent rain and warm temperatures may have given the Mongols the energy source they needed to conquer Eurasia: grass for their horses.
This idea, bolstered by the discovery of tree rings that preserve a climate history of Mongolia back to 657 A.D., is still in the preliminary stages of investigation. LiveScience spoke with Amy Hessl, the dendochronologist, or tree-ring researcher, who along with collaborators Neil Pederson and Baatarbileg Nachin first discovered the preserved trees hinting at the weather during the era of the Mongols.
LiveScience: How did you find the trees that held the Mongolian climate record?
Hessl: We were funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Geographic Society a few years ago to look at how climate change is impacting wildfire activity in Mongolia. So we had driven by this lava flow that looked reminiscent of other places I know of in the American West that have really long climate records from tree rings. The trees growing on these dry, exposed sites tend to grow until they're really old. And then once they die, the wood decays slowly. It allows you to reconstruct environmental conditions going back a very long time.
We drove by this lava flow, and I was like, "Whoa, that looks like an ideal place." So we went back, and even when we did sample, we didn't think we had anything that great. We were just throwing these pieces of wood back and forth to each other, like, "Oh, we'll make this one into coffee table art." We weren't taking it real seriously.
LiveScience: How did you realize that you'd found something important?
Hessl: I gave them to my colleague Neil Pederson [of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory]. He didn't look at them for months, until finally he didn't have anything else to do, so he started to date them. I started getting these texts from him on a Friday night and he was like, "I'm back to the 1200s."
Finally, I get this text that just had three numbers on it, 657. I was like, "What was that, does he want me to call him at 6:57 in the morning?" It turned out to be the date of the oldest, most inner ring, 657 C.E. (C.E. stands for Common Era, the period coinciding with the Christian Era and preferred by some as a non-religious alternative to anno Domini, or A.D.)
There are certainly other tree-ring records that go back much farther, but this is special for Mongolia because it clearly covers the period of the rise of [Mongol Emperor] Genghis Khan. [Fight, Fight, Fight: The History of Human Aggression]
LiveScience: How can tree rings tell you what the past climate was like?
Hessl: These trees are growing on this lava, and there's very little soil development, so they're really, really water-stressed. When the tree rings are narrow, that tells you that during its growing season there was very little water available. The bigger the rings, the wetter it was.
LiveScience: What sort of climate patterns did you see as the Mongol Empire arose?
Hessl: It's very preliminary, but in the couple of trees we have in that time period we can see that the rings are not only wide, but they're consistently wide for the time that overlaps with the rise of Genghis Khan.
Our inference there is that this would have been an ideal time for high grassland productivity on the steppe, and that maybe translated into more livestock, especially horses for the Mongols.
To put it in perspective, each Mongol warrior had 10 horses at his disposal. Just right there, that's a huge amount of biomass that is required. In addition to that, when the Mongols expanded their range in their traveling and marauding, they brought with them large numbers of livestock that they used to feed themselves. Their whole military operation was basically predicated on the fact that they had large numbers of grazing animals. These climate conditions would have given them more energy to fuel their empires. LiveScience: What happened later on during the Mongol era?
Hessl: There's a well-known cold period that occurred after a volcanic eruption in 1258, and we can see this plunge into cold, dry conditions in Mongolia. At that same time, right around 1260, the Mongols moved their capital city out of the steppe and into Beijing, and we think it's possible that was related as well. We have a historian, Nicola DiCosmo of the Institute for Advanced Study, we're working with who is going to go back through all of the Chinese documents, Mongolian records and European accounts to try to see if there's information that would corroborate our findings or not.
LiveScience: Are you going back to Mongolia?
Hessl: I'm leaving in a week, actually! We're going to go back to the same lava flow and collect additional samples because we didn't really put our hearts into it the first time. We were only there for a few hours.
We've also identified some other lava fields in Mongolia that we think may have a similar ecological setting. We're also collaborating with some other people. One is Avery Cook Shinneman of the University of Washington, who studies lake sediments. She's going to be taking cores out of lakes in the Orkhon Valley, the seat of the Mongol Empire, looking for a little fungal spore that lives in livestock feces. What we're hoping is that we can get some general numbers and density of the livestock around these lakes going back in time.
LiveScience: What do you find interesting about linking past climate to history like this?
Hessl: It's fascinating to think about the energy sources that previous civilizations were dependent on, and when those energy sources were abundant how those societies responded, and when those energy sources evaporated, how did they adapt to that?
Society today is dealing with major threats to our primary energy source, so it's fascinating to me to look back on these earlier civilizations to see them going through the same transitions. It just puts our current situation in perspective.

Dave Colavito: Fracking Insurance: Winners and Losers
Reaction to the AP story was predictable.
The leaked internal memo, indicating that Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. had determined risks from the controversial process of hydraulic fracturing were too great to provide coverage for, was interpreted by some as vindication of their concerns and by others as ill-informed betrayal.
But the ensuing brouhaha overshadowed the asymmetric nature of the energy development insurance market -- where lessors and lessees have damage coverage options unavailable to others.
When I recently spoke with Dr. Robert Hartwig, President of the Insurance Information Institute, about why that is, he explained that insurers have no way to control and underwrite actions of a third party. In other words, if you're someone concerned about potential impacts from energy development occurring around you, but aren't in a development contract with an energy company, your only option to receive compensation for something like contamination of your drinking water, is to hire an attorney to pursue your claim through the vagaries (and expense) of the court system -- a poor substitute for the assurance of damage recovery through the force of contract with an insurance provider. Landowners who lease have the opportunity to hitch their horse to a company's insurance wagon.
Hartwig also points out there's nothing new in principle here, because many risks aren't mitigated through typical homeowner policies and therefore require similar legal action on the part of those affected by them. So in that sense, the avenue for pursuing compensation for certain kinds of fracking-related damage is no different.
True enough.
But principle and practice appear at odds here. After all, overcoming the reluctance to cover third party actions seems to occur all around us. For example, if your motor vehicle policy includes collision coverage, you don't need a court action to receive compensation for your parked car destroyed by a drunk driver -- you have a contract with your insurance company and unless there's a valid reason to the contrary, it's honored.
Furthermore, should past become prologue merely by virtue of being the past? It's a valid question generally, but particularly so for states like New York that are trying to conceive a new regulatory framework -- intended to function on a regional scale -- for an industrial activity never before permitted there -- high volume horizontal hydraulic fracturing of the Marcellus Shale.
But the disparate reality between insurance options for those party to energy leases and those who aren't carries important implications well beyond the limitations confronting non-leasing landowners trying to recover damages they might incur.
When I asked Jack Driscoll of Driscoll Insurance and Financial Services about those disparities, he not only confirmed them, but went on to explain the principle, and additional peril, of wide-net litigation, an equal opportunity damage recovery exploiter that doesn't discriminate between non-leasing landowners and those who do.
It goes something like this:
You're a non-leasing property owner proximate to gas development occurring elsewhere in the Marcellus Shale. Let's say a stream courses through your property and that of others being leased; say further that fracking-related activities have contaminated that stream.
The legal action taken by those adversely affected from that contamination is then met by the legal equivalent of, "how do you know it's me and not the other guy?" -- prompting the net of legal action to be cast widely as possible and thereby also entangling you. Those in contract with a gas company, and adequately linked to their respective company's insurance, are in a far better position than you. It's a net the extrication from which Driscoll suggests could cost you, the non-leasing property owner, hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal expenses.
The concern is further compounded by the fact that related problems can take years, sometimes decades, to discern and, well, you get the picture.
Insurance for non-leasing property owners may be available through what's referred to as specialty policies, but that doesn't mean it's affordable (that principle/practice thing again) -- a concern reduced to part of the cost of doing business for gas companies. When I contacted Public Relations at Independent Oil and Gas Association of New York for an energy industry perspective, I explained my subject area of interest -- and that I was preparing a related piece for the media. My contact information was politely requested, and I was told my query would be referred to their expert, that he'd be getting in touch with me. When I asked how much time that might take, the answer proved to be unanswerable, at least in terms of time. I appreciate IOGA NY's shared concern for the non-leasing landowner, and remain confident that eventually I'll receive comment from their expert.
I also inquired with local agents for Allstate and State Farm, two of several companies I've inquired with in the past on such matters. Their answers haven't changed -- and fell squarely in line with both Hartwig and Driscoll.
Again, Jack Driscoll:
The additional hazards associated with gas well exploration and the use of hydro-fracking techniques used in gas well[s], production and the resultant increase in infrastructure such as well pads, pipelines and roads to service the wells have increased the potential for the frequency and size of liability losses to property owners within the region.
Landowners in the area have experienced land ownership and purchasing issues regarding land that is currently within, adjacent to or simply near a well or proposed well site. Lenders require the borrower to obtain and maintain insurance to protect the lenders' interest in the event of a loss on the property. If insurance cannot be obtained lenders may claim the loan is in default or refuse new loan applications.
Insurance companies are in the business of making money by mitigating financial risks for their policy holders. In order to remain in business, collective policy premiums need to exceed the collective expense of liabilities over time. That's neither good nor bad; it just is. But such a characteristic renders it incompatible with protecting people and the environment when there isn't money to be made. It's a deficiency we rely on government at all levels to address.
But the deficiency isn't getting addressed, and indications from the experts I've talked with suggest it won't be any time soon, if ever.
Here in New York, neither Governor Andrew Cuomo nor the state's Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Conservation, Joseph Martens, has offered any guidance on this crucial concern. And it isn't because they're unaware of it.
Records from testimony presented to New York's DEC last fall document similar insurance related concerns for those not leasing.
As principles so often go, Mr. Cuomo's too are clear, and admirably reflected in his creed: Performance, Integrity, Pride, but if as Governor of the great state of New York he intends to truly embody the words of his creed, he needs to align those principles with practice.

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England (AP) ? Brandt Snedeker plays fast and talks even faster, and he was on a roll Friday in the British Open. He raced up the leaderboard with five birdies in a seven-hole stretch, tied the 36-hole record for a major championship and looked like he was bent on running away from the field at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.
Not so fast.
Along came Adam Scott, playing cautiously and picking his spots for three birdies on the back nine to pull within one shot. Not far behind was Tiger Woods, sticking to a conservative game plan and delivering a dramatic finish by holing out from the bunker to set off a wild cheer from 6,000 spectators crammed into the bleachers.
As the second round ended, this Open was just getting started.
On another benign day when the only concern was pools forming in the bottom of pot bunkers from overnight rain, Snedeker became the latest player to match the course record at Royal Lytham with a 6-under 64 that gave him a one-shot lead.
He has yet to make a bogey over 36 holes, the first player to go bogey-free in the opening two rounds of a major since Woods won at St. Andrews in 2000. Snedeker's 10-under 130 tied the 36-hole record set by Nick Faldo in 1992 when he won the Open at Muirfield, and it broke by four shots the 36-hole record at Lytham.
Even more amazing? Snedeker hasn't hit into any of the 206 bunkers in two days.
"No bogeys around here is getting some good breaks and playing some pretty good golf," Snedeker said. "My mantra all week has been to get the ball on the greens as fast as possible. Once I'm on there, I have a pretty good hand for the speed of the greens. Just going to try and keep doing that over the weekend."
Snedeker has never made the cut in three previous trips to the British Open, though this brand of golf is nothing new. As a rookie on the PGA Tour in 2007, he was 10 under through 10 holes on the North Course at Torrey Pines before having to settle for a 61. He picked up his third win there this year by rallying from a seven-shot deficit on the last day.
"Brandt is a momentum-type guy, once he gets going and starting making putts and hitting shots," said Mark Calcavecchia, another player who doesn't waste time. "He plays quick and he's got the quick tempo and he putts quick. And they go in quick. That's awesome golf."
What does that get him?
"A whole lot of nothing," Snedeker said. "We've got 36 more holes to go. A lot can happen."
And that was before Scott, the 32-year-old Australian, began making his steady move up the leaderboard. He bogeyed the third hole for the second straight day, and then turned it around by smashing a 3-wood that bounced off a hillock to the right of the green on the par-5 seventh hole and set up a two-putt birdie. Scott opened the back nine with back-to-back birdies, and then hit two beautiful shots to 8 feet for another birdie on the 18th and a 67.
Scott, who had a 64 on Thursday, has never been in such good shape at a major going into the weekend.
"Why I've played good this week is kind of a culmination of everything I've done over the last couple of years," Scott said. "I feel like this is the path I've been going down, and just happens to have happened here that I've put myself in good position after two days at a major."
Much like Snedeker, though, he didn't reach much more into it.
"I think you look at the names that are five and six shots back, and it means even less," he said.
The biggest name was Woods.
Woods mapped out a strategy for navigating the bunkers of Royal Lytham, and not even a change in the weather ? only a breath of wind ? will take him away from that. He has hit driver only three times this week. On the par-5 11th, where several players hit driver for a chance to go for the green in two, Woods laid back with an iron. He pulled it into the rough, and it cost him. Woods had to get up-and-down from behind the green for a bogey.
That was his lone mistake, however. He holed an 18-foot birdie on the 16th hole, and then fooled by what little wind there was on the 18th, recovered by holing out from the greenside bunker with a shot that rolled into the cup for his second straight 67 and a 6-under 134.
"It wasn't as hard as it may have looked," Woods said. "Because I was on the up slope, I could take out that steepness coming off the bunker and land the ball on the flat. So just threw it up there, and I played about a cup outside the left and it landed on my spot and rolled to the right."
Woods will find out if his record in the majors still means anything. This was the eighth time he has opened a major with two rounds in the 60s, and he went on to win on the seven previous occasions ? including all three of his Open titles.
He will be in the penultimate group with Thorbjorn Olesen, a 22-year-old Dane who won for the first time this year on the European Tour. He closed with two birdies, knowing that the last one would give him a 66 and a chance to meet Woods on a Saturday afternoon at golf's oldest championship.
"That was amazing," Olesen said. "He's been my idol in so many years. So it's fantastic to have a chance to play with him. And I'm certainly looking forward to it."
The rest of the field would love nothing more than for the wind to show up.
The forecast, which cannot be trusted in these parts, is for mostly sunny skies and perhaps enough wind to fly a kite on the shoreline of the Irish Sea. The blustery conditions are to arrive Sunday, which would make all those bunkers and the high grass even tougher to avoid and possibly allow others to get into the mix.
Paul Lawrie, who came from 10 shots behind on the final day at Carnoustie in 1999 to win the claret jug, overcame two double bogeys to salvage a 71 and was in the group at 4-under 136 that included Graeme McDowell (69), Matt Kuchar (67), Jason Dufner (66) and Thomas Aiken (68).
"The forecasts I've seen so far have all been wrong," Kuchar said. "So I don't put a whole lot of stock in what's coming. I think all of us would like to see some more British Open-like conditions. I think everybody would like to have a little bit more wind just to test us a little bit more out here."
Ernie Els squandered some chances by missing a few short putts on the back nine, though he still carved out a 70 and was at 137.
Luke Donald's day stated early, and not just with his tee time. His caddie, John McLaren, called to say his pregnant wife was due any minute. No matter. He used Gareth Lord ? almost on the bag at Disney last year when Donald won to capture the PGA Tour money title ? and he had a 68 to join the list at 2-under 138.
Rory McIlroy bought a hotel room and gave some spending cash to the 16-year-old who was hit in the head by his errant tee shot on Thursday. The teenager watched on Friday as McIlroy only hurt himself. He took two shots to get out of a bunker on the par-3 ninth for a double bogey, had to play sideways out of a water-filled bunker on the 17th and wound up with a 75 to fall 12 shots behind.
The cut was at 3-over 143 ? the 13-shot separation speaks to how well Snedeker played. Phil Mickelson never had a chance, taking three double bogeys for a 78 to end his streak of 18 consecutive cuts in the majors that dates to Carnoustie five years ago.
Tom Watson, 62, extended his record as the oldest player to make the cut in the Open by holing a 35-foot birdie putt on the final hole.
It was a fitting end to the day.
Snedeker idolized Watson growing up, and he has just enough freckles under that strawberry-blond mop to resemble the five-time Open champion. He has learned to accept the odd bounces and embrace the Open beyond the links, hanging out in the pubs and appreciating the locals' love of golf.
As for their games? Snedeker doesn't hit the ball on the button the way Watson does ? not many do.
"I would love to be like him," Snedeker said. "We both make pretty quick decisions. There's no hold-back in either one of our swings. He's one of the best ball strikers of all time. I am not, by any stretch of the imagination. But I think we both hole a lot of putts. Tom in his prime holed a lot of 25- and 30-footers. And when I'm playing well, I tend to do that a lot, too."
