Bobby Britton was the best dressed junior varsity boys basketball coach in Bay County last season. He?ll be the best dressed varsity head coach in Bay County next season.
Britton was named the new boys coach at Arnold late Thursday. He takes over for James Baxley, who wasn?t asked to return following eight years at the position. The Marlins finished 8-18 last season with only one senior.
Britton spent three seasons under the tutelage of Mosley coach Chris Martello. Britton was the JV head coach last season, leading the Dolphins to a 13-6 finish.
He made a name for himself by coaching in fine Dillard?s suits, choosing the fancier digs over polo shirts worn by most of his contemporaries.
?I have to bring that style with me,? Britton said. ?I just have to change up the shirt and tie now, suits are too expensive to buy more.?
Britton is aware that looking good on the sidelines is one thing, but looking good on the court is much more important. The former Mosley standout and Faulkner University football player has guided the Panama City Elite AAU team the past two years. He has coached many of the Dolphins who made improvements and went on to college, including Kurt Barger.
Britton, 24, said Arnold Principal Keith Bland kept a trained eye on him during his days at Mosley and beyond.
?He has been looking at me ever since I moved back to the area,? Britton said. ?He saw something in me that I also saw in myself at a young age.
?I?m really excited. He wants a young guy that?s innovative and creative and will be around a while. I?ll start the program from the bottom and bring them to the top.?
Britton said he will infuse the basketball program with other young coaches. He plans to bring along his AAU assistant, Matt Griffin, as well as bringing back former Marlins? star Tyler Schwab on the staff. Britton also has extended an invitation to Frankie Padula, the duo attending Mosley and Faulkner together, to be the strength and conditioning coach.
Britton said he will also speak with members of Baxley?s staff, including Rich Blaho, who has been instrumental in organizing the Marlins? annual Christmas tournament. Britton said Blaho is a diligent worker and his knowledge of basketball is invaluable.
Britton will teach history at the school. His aim is to turn around the recent history for Arnold, which has produced struggles, and make the Marlins synonymous with style and excellence, like his perfectly tailored suits.
?Not much is expected from Arnold, I feel, in the community,? Britton said. ?I think we can make basketball and our athletics the best in the county.
?We want to bring that passion and excitement we created at Mosley and bring it out to the beach. We think it?s possible to change the team?s mentality and be ready to compete sooner than later.?
