LG Optimus L9 hands-on (video)

LG Optimus L9 handson

Though LG didn't have any more to add to the L-Style series to offer the world? Behold the L9. Announced yesterday, the device made an appearance on the IFA show room floor this week, boasting a big and bright 4.7-inch IPS display that makes the its brethren looking downright shrimpy by comparison. In spite of the display size, the phone feels light, with a 8.9-millimeter profile.

It's important to note here that, in spite of being the king of the L-Series, it's still part of a budget lineup, and as such, the phone's body feels a bit plastickey, and the textured rear had a bit of trouble staying snapped in place in the two models (black and white) that we played with. Specwise, we're talking a 1GHz dual-core processor,1GB of RAM inside, 4GB of storage (expandable via a microSD slot and a 2,150mAh battery. The handset's rocking Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.4, to be precise).

The handset's got a fairly nice bezel, with the front-facing camera on the top and a home button on the bottom, flanked by illuminating back and menu touch buttons. A larger, 5MP camera is located on the rear of the device, above the flash. Vodafone has the handset priced at €50.90 subsidized and €340 unsubsidized. Peep a video of the handset, after the break.

'Metal Gear Solid' Movie Officially Announced

As "Spider-Man" producer Avi Arad puts it, "Video games are the comic books of today." That must be why Hollywood is so gung-ho about putting together as many video game adaptations as it can this year. The latest to add to the list is "Metal Gear Solid," which Kotaku reports was just announced at a [...]

Are Kindergarten Kids Getting Their Vaccines? | Health X Pert ...

? CDC Says Most Kindergartners Get Vaccinated, but Improvement Is Needed WebMD Medical News By Matt McMillen Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD Aug. 23, 2012 ? Most kindergartners are up to date with their vaccines, but federal immunization goals nevertheless remain unmet, the CDC says. According to a CDC report, the average number of kids who have been vaccinated for measles , mumps, and rubella is 94.8%. Health officials have set their target at greater than 95%. ?Coverage is not the way it should be,? says Jaime Deville, MD. Deville is a professor of pediatric infectious diseases at UCLA?s Mattel Children?s Hospital. He reviewed the report for WebMD. ?This report really confirms what?s already well known,? he says. The report?s authors point out that vaccine rates vary significantly from state to state. The five states that are doing the best job of vaccinating kids against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) are: Texas 99.3% Mississippi 99.2% Nebraska 99% Maryland 98.7% Louisiana 98.1% The five states that need the most improvement when it comes to MMR vaccines are: Colorado 86.8% Pennsylvania 86.9% Kansas 88.2% Idaho 89.2% North Dakota 90.6%? Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Other Vaccines The report also tallies vaccine numbers for tetanus , diphtheria, acellular pertussis (whooping cough), polio, hepatitis B, and varicella (chickenpox). Forty seven states, the District of Columbia, and five other areas reported their vaccine numbers. The city of Houston submitted its own figures, which were the highest reported, at 99.5% for MMR. Figures for Wyoming, New Hampshire, and New Jersey were not available. California, the state where Deville teaches and practices, met the 95% goal for only two of the vaccines: chickenpox and hepatitis B. ?Our coverage is really not ideal,? says Deville. He says the number of children in his state who were granted exemptions from vaccines for medical, religious, or philosophical reasons is too high for comfort. ?We see there are 12,000 out of the half million kindergarten age kids here,? says Deville. ?That?s a sizable percentage that right off the bat won?t be vaccinated.? Exemptions From Immunization Overall, according to the report, 1.5% of children were granted exemptions from vaccinations. That figure varied dramatically from state to state. Mississippi, which does not allow religious or philosophical exemptions, had an exemption rate below 0.1%, the lowest number in the country. Alaska granted exemptions to 7% of its children. Arkansas reported the largest increase in exemptions from the previous year; Nebraska reported the steepest decline. For the most part, the percentages reported reflect statewide averages. However, the report?s authors point out the need to focus on local rates of immunization that might get overlooked when focusing on the big picture. ?Since exemptions cluster geographically, there might be smaller areas and schools where low levels of immunization could sustain ongoing measles transmission after importation from other countries,? the report states. Measles Still Threatens Children?s Health While the current level of vaccine coverage is likely to prevent any major outbreaks of measles, Deville says, measles ? and other diseases for which vaccines are available ? should be on parents? radar. ?We?ve been seeing only about 50 cases a year for the past several years, but that number has begun to creep up,? he says. In 2011, 222 cases of measles were reported to the CDC, the highest number in 15 years. Most of those cases, the report says, were brought here from outside the U.S. ?Measles,? Deville says, ?is one of the most contagious diseases, with significant complications and mortality. We don?t want to deal with it again.? Deville points to recent whooping cough outbreaks as examples of why parents need to make sure their kids are properly vaccinated. It?s easy to think there is little to worry about when such diseases are rarely seen these days, he says. That?s a mistake. ?Just because we don?t see them doesn?t mean they no longer exist,? Deville says. ?These diseases are not gone.? Crown prince in charge as Saudi king leaves on holiday

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Salman has temporarily taken charge of running the world's top oil exporter for the first time, after the royal court said on Monday King Abdullah had gone abroad for a holiday.

"We deputize, according to our order, Crown Prince Salman to manage state affairs and oversee the interests of the people during our absence from the kingdom," said a royal court statement carried by Saudi Press Agency.

The brief statement did not say where King Abdullah, who is 89, had gone, or how long he was expected to be abroad in a country where the health of senior royals is keenly watched.

Salman was appointed Abdullah's heir in June after the deaths of two crown princes, Sultan and Nayef, in eight months.

The role of crown prince does not just mean Salman would inherit power after Abdullah's death, but makes him the king's deputy in wielding executive power.

Salman, who is also Saudi Arabia's Defence Minister, served as governor of Riyadh province for about five decades. Diplomats say he will likely continue Abdullah's cautious economic and social reforms when he becomes king.

Two weeks ago, King Abdullah appeared in good health hosting a summit conference for Muslim countries in Mecca, where he briefly stood to welcome each arriving leader and chatted between greetings with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Senior Saudi royals often holiday outside the kingdom during its sweltering summer months, but Abdullah has in the past also sometimes chosen to stay at his desert farm inside the country.

Saudi Arabia's political system concentrates decision-making in the hands of a few top members of the royal family, meaning the health and movements of the king, crown prince and other senior people are closely watched.

Abdullah had operations for a back complaint in 2010 and 2011.

The Pepperdine Graphic ? Waste time with the right game system

?

Gamers, both male and female, can?t wait to setup their TVs, plug in their Xbox or Play Station and lose themselves for hours on end.

Now the question is, which system will you be playing instead of studying for Humanities? Although there are some die-hard game system advocates, the majority of us do not really care about which system we are using as long as we are having fun.

There are three major systems on the market right now: the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3. Each of these offers a different gaming experience for a different type of gamer.

The Nintendo Wii is more for the casual gamer ? someone who does not play games often but enjoys them occasionally with friends. The graphics of this system are usually subpar in comparison with gaming systems like the Xbox and PlayStation.

However, Wii does have extremely interactive games that get your body involved. For example, with Wii Sports and Wii Resort games, everyone can have fun looking foolish as they try to box, play pingpong and bowl a perfect game. The Wii also allows you to connect to the Internet through a wireless router. This permits you to use features such as Netflix straight from your Wii console.

The Xbox 360 is a system for gamers anywhere from casual to intense. The system?s graphics are far superior to that of the Nintendo Wii. There is also a much wider breadth of games that can be purchased for the Xbox. Unfortunately, a majority of these games are not multiplayer friendly.

Xbox Games do include some of the most memorable games of our time, including Halo and some of the Gears of War games. The Xbox also boasts the Xbox Kinect System, which actually puts your body movements into the game you are playing. This gives the Xbox a similar feature to that of the Wii. However, this Kinect system does come as a costly extra.

When it comes to online play, Xbox is placed at the top with the pool of people who play online. However, Xbox Live (the online gaming world of Xbox) has to be purchased a certain time period. This is a major drawback for the Xbox. Despite this, Xbox continues to be a powerhouse on college campuses because of its relatively low price for a great machine.

The final gaming system is the PlayStation 3. The PlayStation system is very similar to Xbox 360 in terms of graphics and types of games available. The main difference is the playstation allows you to play games for free online as long as you have a wireless router at your disposal.

Games like ?NBA 1k12? and ?Call of Duty? can be played online for hours on end without having to worry about paying fees. Playstation also has a built in Blu-ray player so you can watch all your favorite movies when you need a break from not studying.

Each of the systems will provide hours of distraction. The Nintendo Wii will run you about $150, the Microsoft Xbox 360 is $200 and $300 with the Kinect, while the Sony PlayStation 3 will cost $250. So the choice is yours ? procrastinate wisely.

Neil Armstrong, 1930-2012: U.S. astronaut was first man to walk on the moon

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2012) ? Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon during the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, has died, following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures. He was 82.

Armstrong's words "That is one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind," spoken on July 20, 1969, as he became the first person ever to step onto another planetary body, instantly became a part of history.

Those few words from the Sea of Tranquillity were the climactic fulfillment of the efforts and hopes of millions of people and the expenditure of billions of dollars. A plaque on one of the lander's legs that concluded "We came in peace for all mankind," further emphasized that Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin were there as representatives of all humans.

Armstrong is survived by his wife, two sons, a stepson, a stepdaughter, 10 grandchildren, and a brother and sister.

"Neil Armstrong was a hero not just of his time, but of all time," said President Barack Obama. "Thank you, Neil, for showing us the power of one small step."

Armstrong's family released the following statement on Saturday:

"Neil Armstrong was also a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job. He served his Nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut. He also found success back home in his native Ohio in business and academia, and became a community leader in Cincinnati. ...

"While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves."

The family will be providing further updates at www.neilarmstronginfo.com .

"As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

"Besides being one of America's greatest explorers," Bolden added, "Neil carried himself with a grace and humility that was an example to us all."

Apollo 11 lunar module pilot and fellow moonwalker Buzz Aldrin on Armstrong's passing: "I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Neil Armstrong today. Neil and I trained together as technical partners but were also good friends who will always be connected through our participation in the Apollo 11 mission. Whenever I look at the moon it reminds me of the moment over four decades ago when I realized that even though we were farther away from earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone."

Apollo 11 command module pilot Michael Collins said simply, "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly."

"The passing of Neil Armstrong has shocked all of us at the Johnson Space Center," said Center Director Michael Coats. The whole world knew Neil as the first man to step foot on the Moon, but to us he was a co-worker, a friend, and an outstanding spokesman for the Human Space Program. His quiet confidence and ability to perform under pressure set an example for all subsequent astronauts. Our role model will be missed."

"Neil Armstrong was a very personal inspiration to all of us within the astronaut office," said Bob Behnken, Chief of NASA's Astronaut Office. "His historic step onto the Moon's surface was the foundation for many of our personal dreams to become astronauts. The only thing that outshone his accomplishments was his humility about those accomplishments. We will miss him as a friend, mentor, explorer and ambassador for the American spirit of ingenuity."

Armstrong's single sentence, though it was focused above the national divisions and quarrels of Earth, still signified unquestionably the U.S. victory in the desperate space race with the Soviet Union.

Neil A. Armstrong was born Aug. 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He earned an aeronautical engineering degree from Purdue University and a master's in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California.

He was a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952. During the Korean War he flew 78 combat missions.

In 1955 he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), NASA's predecessor, as a research pilot at Lewis Laboratory in Cleveland.

Armstrong later transferred to NACA's High Speed Flight Research Station at Edwards AFB, Calif. As project pilot, he was in the forefront of the development of many high-speed aircraft, including the X-15, which flew at 4,000 mph.

He flew more than 200 aircraft models. They included jet and rocket-powered planes, helicopters and gliders.

Armstrong was selected as an astronaut in 1962.

His first space flight was Gemini 8, which he commanded. He was the first civilian to fly a U.S. spacecraft. With fellow astronaut David R. Scott, Armstrong performed the first docking in space, with an Agena target satellite.

Less than an hour later their spacecraft began an unplanned rolling motion. After undocking, it increased to one revolution per second. One of the Gemini's 16 thrusters had stuck open because of an electrical short circuit.

Armstrong used re-entry thrusters to control the capsule, and after a 30-minute struggle, it was stabilized. Flight rules required a return to Earth after use of the re-entry thrusters, so the crewmembers fired retrorockets that sent Gemini 8 to a contingency landing zone in the Western Pacific.

The eventful flight on March 16, 1966, had taken just over 10 hours, 41 minutes.

Apollo 11 lifted off on July 16, 1969, with Armstrong, Aldrin and Mike Collins aboard. Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module while Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the lunar module they had named Eagle to their historic landing on the moon's surface.

"Houston, Tranquillity Base here. The Eagle has landed," Armstrong said, telling a tense and waiting Earth that men had finally reached the lunar surface.

He and Aldrin spent about two hours exploring, gathering more than 50 pounds of moon rocks and setting up three scientific experiments. The next day, after 21 hours and 37 minutes on the moon, they fired Eagle's engine to begin the return to Collins and the command module.

The crew returned to Earth, landing near the USS Hornet in the Pacific after a mission of just over eight days. President Richard M. Nixon was on the aircraft carrier's deck to welcome them.

"This is the greatest week in the history of the world since the creation," Nixon told the three.

After 16 days in quarantine to protect Earth from any returned moon germs, the crew went on U.S. and international tours. Millions greeted them as heroes.

Armstrong later served as deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the Office of Advanced Research and technology at NASA Headquarters. He resigned from the space agency in 1971. As a professor at the University of Cincinnati from 1971 to 1979, he was involved in both teaching and research.

He later went into the business world. Among other positions, he served for 10 years as chairman of Computing Technologies for Aviation Inc. of Charlottesville, Va. and later as chairman of AIL Systems Inc., an electronic systems company based in Deer Park, N.Y.

Armstrong was a fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and the Royal Aeronautical Society, and an honorary fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the International Astronautical Federation.

He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He served as a member of the National Commission on Space in 1985 and 1986, and in 1985 was vice chairman of the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident. He also was chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Peace Corps from 1971 to 1973.

Seventeen countries decorated Armstrong. He received many special honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, NASA's Ambassador of Exploration Award, the Explorers Club Medal, the Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the Harmon International Aviation Trophy, the Royal Geographic Society's Gold Medal, the Federation Aeronautique Internationale's Gold Space Medal, the American Astronautical Society Flight Achievement Award, the Robert J. Collier Trophy, the AIAA Astronautics Award, the Octave Chanute Award, and the John J. Montgomery Award.

Asian markets fall on signs of fading growth

BEIJING (AP) ? Asian markets fell Friday as disappointment over weak economic indicators from the United States, China and Europe offset hopes for more stimulus from central banks.

Oil fell below $96 a barrel after a member of the U.S. Federal Reserve's policymaking board dampened hopes for additional stimulus.

Japan's Nikkei 225 declined 1.2 percent to 9,070.76 and China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 1 percent to 2,090.81. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 1.2 percent to 19,898.43.

Traders were dismayed by U.S. data showing the number of people seeking unemployment assistance rose for a second straight week.

Markets rose Wednesday after minutes of the Federal Reserve's last policy meeting showed bankers favored more stimulus. But they fell Thursday after the president of the St. Louis Fed said officials were considering new data that might make further action unnecessary.

"There now once again appears to be a state of confusion as to what the market can expect from the Fed at its next meeting in mid-September," analyst Cameron Peacock of Australia's IG Markets said in a report.

Elsewhere in Asia, South Korea's Kospi declined 1.2 percent to 1,919.81, while Australia's S&P ASX 200 was off 0.8 percent at 4,349.

In China, a survey found manufacturing activity weakened in August despite repeated government stimulus efforts. HSBC Corp. said Thursday the preliminary version of its purchasing managers' index fell to a nine-month low of 47.8 on a scale on which numbers below 50 indicate a contraction. New export orders fell at their fastest rate in three years.

Beijing cut interest rates twice in June and is pumping money into the economy through high spending on public works. Several major cities have announced multibillion-dollar spending plans but analysts expect major initiatives to be put off until after a new Communist Party leadership is installed this fall.

U.S. new home sales rose 3.6 percent in July, but DBS Group said that only offset a drop of identical size the previous month.

Aside from improved employment and retail sales in July, "the data has been unchanged or slightly worse," DBS Group economists said in a report.

In Europe, the PMI of overall economic activity in the 17-country eurozone was at 46.6 points in August, up only slightly from July's 46.5.

Analysts said the number shows the eurozone is firmly in recession, which will hurt efforts to reduce debt and boost investor confidence. Any improvement is likely to depend on governments and central banks doing more to reform their economies and boost demand.

The European Central Bank is expected to present in coming weeks a plan to help indebted countries such as Spain and Italy by buying their government bonds.

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will travel to Germany on Friday to meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel, and to France on Saturday for talks with President Francois Hollande.

Samaris is asking that Greece be given more time to meet deficit targets and implement reforms. Germany's finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, poured cold water on that idea, saying more time would not solve Greece's problems.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2542 from $1.2566 late Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 78.60 yen from 78.47 yen.

Benchmark oil for October delivery fell 67 cents to $95.60 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 99 cents to finish at $96.27 per barrel.

Call Kurtis: Why Would I Need Flood Insurance For My Neighbor's ...

With her neighborhood situated far from any rivers, lakes or levees, Blanca Pace never thought to get flood insurance.

Until, as she learned, it was too late.

Pace remembered opening her back door on a breezy May morning while she prepared breakfast ? looking through her kitchen window, she watched thousands of gallons of water crash through her fence, wash away years of landscaping and flow into her home.

?At first I thought, ?I need a towel,? and then I thought, ?I need a broom,?? she said, still started from the sudden water more than two months later. ?Then I thought, ?No, I need help.??

A lifetime of furniture and keepsakes now stockpiled in her living room, Pace described her day-to-day life since that morning.

?It feels horrible to live this way,? she said. ?I get up every morning and say, ?When is this going to end???

Carpets and floors in her home of 22 years now ruined and landscaping destroyed, Pace calculated about $75,000 in damage.

But her insurance company, Ameriprise, refused to help ? sending a letter saying she?s not covered.

?They say they cannot represent me because this is a flood,? she said.

Stuck alone fighting her neighbor?s insurance company, Allstate, Pace rejected offers of about $11,000, about $51,000, and then about $ 59,000, she said.

She can?t afford to pay thousands of her own money out of pocket.

?There?s at least $10,000, $15,000 difference here, and I don?t have that type of money,? she said.

?This isn?t truly surface water,? argues consumer attorney Eric Ratinoff, who specializes in insurance cases. ?This is an event.?

Pace never should have had to fight her neighbor?s insurance company ? her own insurance company should have covered the damage, Ratinoff said.

?This sudden, accidental event that occurs where their house floods should be covered under this policy,? he said.

But Ameriprise stood firm, telling CBS13 Pace?s policy specifically excludes surface water damage.

Pace filed a complaint with the Department of Insurance, which told her it?s now investigating Ameriprise.

?I see all this devastation and I don?t know when it?s going to end,? she said.

3 Tips on How to Successfully Interact with Twitter Brand Pages ...

I tweet at their Twitter handle all the time,Image but they never follow me back! Why? Why doesn?t my favorite brand want to follow me?

Twitter is unique in the social media sphere as being one of the few platforms where brands can engage with their ever-growing audience and have them reply back in a matter of seconds ? many with the expectation that the brand itself will return the reply favor and follow their own personal account. Leading the pack with following back are brands like Coca-Cola, Sephora, and even President Barack Obama. But for the companies that are choosier with who they decide to follow on Twitter, or even tweet back at, here are some tips on how to make that interaction a little bit easier.

Flattery Will Get You Everywhere

Like a funny tweet that one of your favorite comedians just sent? How about a new logo or website design that a local business chain just launched? Maybe you just had the opportunity to meet the Twitter user and want to quickly recap on how great it was to finally meet them in IRL (in real life). By replying back or taking the initiative to start a tweet from scratch directed @ the user, you?re showing that you not only noticed they had mentioned you and were ready to reply back, but that you cared enough about what they did and who they were to start up a conversation in the first place.

Spammy Hashtag Filled Tweets Won?t

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have ?#followme @(insert username here) I always #followback!? Or ?@(insert brand name here) luv your #business it makes me #happy can?t wait to #network soon.? Or even ?thanks for following! Have you read my new #book A Thousand Ways to Smile yet? Available on #nook today!?

Getting one of these messages for following a brand or Twitter persona is already bad enough (through experience they generally fall into your direct message folder though), but tweeting it out is just plain bad manners. Bad, self-promotional, manners. If you?re going to start up a conversation, leave the hashtags out of it unless they are relevant to that specific brand and promoted out through their feed as it is. Don?t spam a company or profile either ? your credibility will be highly questioned otherwise.

But We All Like a Friendly Tweet? Especially When It Comes with a Photo of Your Product!

Ever notice how often times the tweets that get the retweeting action come with a photo of you, in action with the product? Companies like seeing happy customers interact with what they sell and capturing the moment with Instagram says a thousand words to both their followers and your own alike, which is why it gets shared so much. When it doubt, Instagram it out, and the more creative you get, the better. Make the tweet itself super natural too ? just be honest with how much you like a certain product or brand. More often times than not, your genuinely happy moment will be felt on the other side of their social media realm, which could very well lead to a follow back!

Spouses of people suffering a heart attack need care for increased risk of depression and suicide

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Spouses of people who suffer a sudden heart attack (an acute myocardial infarction) have an increased risk of depression, anxiety, or suicide after the event, even if their partner survives, according to new research published online in the European Heart Journal. They suffer more than spouses of people who die from, or survive, other conditions.

The study, which is the first to investigate this and to compare it with people whose spouse died or survived from something other than a heart attack, also found that men were more susceptible to depression and suicide after their wife's survival or death from an acute myocardial infarction (AMI), than women.

Using Danish registries, including the National Civil Status Registry that shows whether people are married or not, researchers in the USA and Denmark compared 16,506 spouses of people who died from an AMI between 1997 and 2008 with 49,518 spouses of people who died from causes unrelated to AMI. They also matched 44,566 spouses of patients who suffered a non-fatal AMI with 131,563 spouses of people admitted to hospital for a non-fatal condition unrelated to AMI. They looked at the use of antidepressants and benzodiazepines (used for treating anxiety) before and up to a year after the event, records of contact with the health system for depression, and suicide.

"We found that more than three times the number of people whose spouses died from an AMI were using antidepressants in the year after the event compared with the year before. In addition, nearly 50 times as many spouses used a benzodiazepine after the event compared to before. For people whose spouse had died from a non-AMI cause, we saw a much higher rate of medication use than for other causes and they had an approximately 50% higher likelihood of claiming a prescription for these drugs," said the first author of the study, Dr Emil Fosb?l. "Those whose spouse survived an AMI had a 17% higher use of antidepressants after the event, whereas spouses of patients surviving some other, non-AMI related condition had an unchanged use of antidepressants after the event compared to before."

Dr Fosb?l, who was a cardiology research fellow at Duke Clinical Research Institute, Duke University Medical Center, North Carolina (USA) at the time of the research, but has now returned to Denmark to work as a cardiologist in Copenhagen, continued: "Overall, the rates of depression were significantly higher after the event in the fatal AMI group and in the fatal non-AMI group. Although the rates were low, those who had lost a spouse to a fatal AMI or whose spouse survived an AMI more often committed suicide than those with spouses who died from, or survived, a non-AMI-related event. We also found that men were more likely to suffer depression and commit suicide after an event than women."

The researchers speculate that it is the sudden and unexpected nature of an AMI that causes the more extreme impact on the spouse. "If your partner dies suddenly from a heart attack, you have no time to prepare psychologically for the death, whereas if someone is ill with, for example, cancer, there is more time to grow used to the idea," said Dr Fosb?l. "The larger psychological impact of a sudden loss is similar to post-traumatic stress disorder."

Dr Fosb?l said their findings have large public health implications as more than seven million people worldwide experience an AMI a year, with around 16% of them dying from it within a month. "This could mean that around 11,000 people would be likely to start antidepressants after a spouse's non-fatal AMI, and 35,000 after their spouse died from an AMI. Moreover, although suicide rates were low, we could expect approximately 1,400 people to take their own life in the year following a spouse's death from a heart attack.

"This is a major public health issue for which there seems to be very little awareness among doctors and policy makers. I think the most important finding of this study is that the system needs to consider the care needs for spouses too, not only when a patient dies from an AMI, but also when the patient is 'just' admitted to hospital with an AMI and survives. Previously, we did not have any data on those patients' spouses where the patient survived the event."

The authors say that there appear to be no mechanisms in place currently to identify spouses at risk and to institute preventive strategies such as screening for depression and grief counselling.

"I think it would be worth conducting a study of a targeted intervention to prevent depression for the spouse," concluded Dr Fosb?l. "I believe that treatment of an acute event also should include screening the spouse for possible psychological effects and a plan should be in place for how to take care of this, if indeed the spouse is severely affected."

New mission to Red Planet gets green light

Two weeks after landing the Curiosity rover on Mars without a hitch, scientists and engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory learned that their InSight mission to study the Martian interior had received the go-ahead from NASA.

InSight ? short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport ? will use a lander to understand how Mars, Earth and other rocky planets were formed in the early days of the solar system.

Planned to launch in March 2016 and reach Mars six months later, the lander would operate for 720 days and give the Red Planet the equivalent of a doctor's physical ? checking its pulse, gauging its reflexes and taking its temperature.

PHOTOS: History of Mars exploration

InSight's instruments will be designed to pick up any seismic activity rumbling through the planet; take note of any meteor impacts on the surface; burrow as much as 16 feet deep to study how heat flows underground; and measure how Mars' two moons exert tidal forces on the planet, causing it to stretch one way or another.

The $425-million mission was selected Monday as part of the Discovery program, which focuses on low-cost planetary exploration. Pathfinder ? the 1997 expedition that delivered the first rover to Mars ? was another such mission.

To save costs, InSight will use some of the same technology employed by the Phoenix lander, which began studying ice near the Martian north pole in 2008.

Insight had faced stiff competition, beating out a proposal to explore Saturn's moon Titan and another to send a spacecraft to the surface of a comet.

The decision to fund another Mars mission at JPL in La Ca?ada Flintridge had nothing to do with Curiosity's successful landing in Gale Crater two weeks ago, scientists said. In fact, the decision was made well in advance of the rover's Aug. 5 landing so that its success or failure would not influence the results, said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

Studying Mars' interior could help scientists understand how the rocky planets evolved billions of years ago, said geophysicist and mission deputy principal investigator Sue Smrekar.

Much of the layered record of Earth's history has been churned up by its own tectonics, she said. Mars has been subject to less internal activity, so it should have a more pristine record of its early formation that can tell scientists about how small, rocky planets came to be.

"This will give us the ability to really add an entirely new data set to our understanding of how planets evolve," she said.

Cold Calling and Telesales - Is It Right for You? | BusinessesA-Z ...

Being in the sales enterprise might be quite a challenge for many. There's these sales quota to fulfill, new customers to entice, market place to maintain, and a number of other activities needed to get the job done. It is troublesome, but also not an unimaginable goal. So long as there are skilled telemarketers to assist, then one wouldn't have to fret about it so much. There are plenty of opportunities in teleselling, and the rewards are great. One can't imagine the windfall attainable in the teleselling profession. Properly, that's, if they are skilled enough to deal with a single sales call. If not, then it a better concept if one simply hires cold calling companies to get the job done. These persons are the perfect on this line of work.

Chilly calling is usually a very disturbing kind of job. It will probably trigger quite a lot of problems if this isn't dealt with properly. In any case, prospecting for receptive patrons is usually a challenge for many involved. They could have difficulties in dealing with the varied quirks and desires of the prospects. Most of the time, a badly managed name can really wreck a promising lead. That might be unhealthy news indeed. That is why increasingly more businesses are relying on skilled telemarketers for this kind of work. They are the professionals who know what to do, and they are probably the most experienced in dealing with troublesome calls. They will find the right prospects, introduces their client's agency correctly, and goes forth into convincing the person on the other finish that their lives would be significantly better in the event that they reap the benefits of the services being supplied by the telemarketers. Performed correctly, teleselling on this method would succeed.

Teleselling has been round for decades. Come to think of it, the primary objective of telemarketing in history is to promote services on the phone. This could solve the problems of old occasions when promotions can sophisticated by distance of the seller to patrons, the fee that traditional promoting entails, and the amount of time it takes earlier than any curiosity is generated. The phone has changed all that. The task of promoting is simpler now. It's also simpler to get in contact with prospects. Even these residing miles away from the seller might be informed of the latest merchandise or service being supplied by the firm. That is most likely the rationale for the staying power of teleselling in any industry.

Actually, cold calling nonetheless works. Despite all of the hullabaloo concerning the abuses committed in the title of prospecting, the fact remains that it might nonetheless deliver. There are various people who find themselves keen to spend. The one factor that is holding them back is that they do not know who to buy from. Now that is a chance that a enterprise ought to grab. A agency can address the needs of these people via teleselling. One can give them a name, work together with them, and who is aware of, perhaps a worthwhile sale is in the making. Indeed, teleselling may very properly be the answer needed by companies in need of better sales volume. This is a good chance for the agency to improve their enterprise efficiency via the use of teleselling.

Opportunities abound to those who are willing. Perhaps, via the use of teleselling, a lagging agency can lastly have the preventing chance to remain in enterprise and be profitable. Creativity, resourcefulness, and focus are just a number of the things needed. And with the help of professional telemarketers, success might be possible. That is good time to make the right choices, and invest in the right strategy.

New Canons offer long zoom on a budget

2 hrs.

If you want to get close to the action but don't feel like shelling out for a DSLR or one of the luxury superzooms, Canon's new cameras might be for you. They've got massive zooms but little else, so while they're not a bargain exactly, you do get what you're looking for.

The SX500 IS (left) is the more expensive option here; it has a remarkable 30x zoom and a new feature that lets you quickly zoom out to find your subject, then zoom in again to snap your photo. It'll set you back $330.?Its little brother, the SX160 IS (top), has only a 16x zoom, and is powered by AAs rather than a battery pack. That one will go for $230.

Both have 3" LCDs on the back,?16-megapixel sensors and (as their names imply) built-in image stabilization. Unfortunately, they also both have small sensors, slow lenses (F/3.4-5.8 and 3.5-5.9) and last-generation image processors. This means that although you'll be able to zoom in to your heart's content, the cameras will struggle to take sharp and bright pictures.

They're budget offerings, though, so such sacrifices are expected. If you want to spend a little more, you can get a cheap DSLR with a kit zoom or one of the nicer superzooms, like Panasonic's impressive FZ200. The SX500 IS and SX160 IS will be available this September.

Rush Limbaugh has never been subtle in his dislikes, but this week he even shocked his own listeners when he compared President Obama to Adolf Hitler.

In an already heated political season where the Obama campaign hasn't been coy about highlighting Mitt Romney's multiple offshore bank accounts, his years of hidden tax returns or his controversial private sector history at Bain Capital, Limbaugh's charge raised eyebrows.

In his attempt to defend Romney, whom he has frequently expressed mixed feelings about, Limbaugh clearly felt he had to turn the rhetoric up to maximum broil this week to inspire his fellow conservatives to rally around his candidacy.

'Propaganda versus truth, which wins?' Limbaugh mused on his show, according to the Examiner.

'Well, what did...what was Hitler more concerned with? Propaganda. Did Hitler succeed for a time? Yeah, he did. What was Clinton more concerned with? Truth or propaganda? What's Obama more concerned with? Truth or propaganda? Who would you say is winning? Is propaganda winning or truth winning? We, the virtuous ones in our society, we think truth wins. We have this investment in the truth. We think it's holy. We think that it is profound, and we think it's persuasive.'

Limbaugh is known for outlandish attention seeking claims and this is not the first time the portly political pundit has compared President Obama to Hitler.

He also famously attacked Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke this year, comparing her to a 'prostitute' for advocating on behalf of womens' sexual health.

Limbaugh has also scoffed that national economic failure is the Democratic party's 'wet dream.' He has also controversially stated that President Obama dislikes and resents the American experience.

PFT: Sanchez, Tebow struggle in loss to Giants

tim-tebow2Getty Images

The Jets have made it widely known that they?ll be using the Wildcat this year.? But what if they actually won?t be using it at all?

They?ve hired former Dolphins coach Tony Sparano, who four years ago bedeviled the Patriots with the surprise unveiling of the NFL?s version of the alternative attack, which works best when the players in the base offense remain on the field.? In September 2008, the Dolphins slapped it together in the week preceding a game in New England ? and they scored four touchdowns on six plays with Ronnie Brown taking the snap in shotgun formation, Ricky Williams lining up as a flanker who would come in motion and either get the ball on a handoff or (in that specific game) not get the ball on a handoff, and quarterback Chad Pennington split wide as a receiver.

Since then, it?s been used by several other teams, even though there has been a sense in more recent seasons that the Wildcat has run its course.? In other incarnations, the Wildcat entailed actually removing the starting quarterback from the field and using a different signal-caller.?? The Eagles did it with Mike Vick (to the chagrin of Donovan McNabb).? The Jets did it with Brad Smith.? Even the Dolphins did it with Pat White, a second-round draft bust taken only months after Miami?s starting-quarterback-stays-on-the-field Wildcat wowed the league.

Tebow has worked with a similar, but different, approach during his two seasons in Denver, lining up in shotgun with a tailback to his side.? The base play is a simple read-option, with the ball going to the running back if the defensive end on the side of the tailback comes wide or staying in Tebow?s hands, with the quarterback running to where the defensive end was if he bites on the handoff and crashes toward what would have been the point of attack.

From that basic look, Tebow can also pass after faking the handoff, as he did on the only play from scrimmage in overtime against the Steelers in January.

If that?s what the Jets will be using, it?s not the Wildcat.? So what will the Jets be using?

There?s a reason, in our view, for the Jets to be so secretive about their practices entailing what they?re calling the ?Wildcat.?? There?s a reason, in our view, for the Jets to have not even broken out the Wildcat (or, as the case may be, the ?TeBone?) in preseason games.? And there?s a reason, in our view, for the Jets to be spending so much time talking about how preparing for the Wildcat will suck time away from preparing for the base offense.

We (and, really, for something potentially as harebrained as this I should say, ?I?) think that, when the Jets host the Bills on September 9, what they use as the ?Wildcat? package will neither be the Wildcat nor the Tebow read-option base offense.

Consider this.? The Bills new quarterbacks coach is David Lee.? He?s the same David Lee who was the quarterbacks coach in Miami in (yep) 2008.? Though Sparano gets the credit for the Miami version of the Wildcat, his offensive coordinator (Dan Henning) called the attack that accounted for 28 points in the 38-13 thrashing of the Pats ?the David Lee Special.?? (That?s straight from Tim Layden?s Blood, Sweat and Chalk, easily the best modern compendium of football analysis.)? It was Lee who had pitched the ?Wild Hog? offense he?d used at Arkansas with Darren McFadden to Henning on the flight home from a 31-10 loss at Arizona only a week earlier.

And it?s Lee who now is working for the team the Jets will face in Week One and Week 17.

Chances are that David Lee knows how to stop the David Lee Special.? Chances are that the Jets won?t be using it.

Last year, Pats coach Bill Belichick showed not once but twice that he knows how to shut down the Broncos TeBone offense.? And, as always, the Jets play the Pats twice.? Chances are that the Jets won?t be using the attack Tebow ran in Denver.

Then there are the Dolphins, who have plenty of guys on defense who were on the team when Sparano ran the show and Lee coached the quarterbacks and the Dolphins used both the true Wildcat and the short-lived and ill-fated Pat White version of the read-option.? Since the Jets also will face Miami twice per year, chances are that the Jets won?t be giving the Dolphins any looks that they may have seen in practice over the past few seasons.

So if it?s not the Wildcat or the TeBone per se, what will the Jets be using?? Maybe it?ll be the true single wing, a shell-game of an offense with a direct snap to Tebow and guys like Shonn Greene as the tailback and John Conner assuming the role of what was/is the ?quarterback? in the offense, lined up not far behind the gap in the two tackles of the unbalanced line ? and ready to blow up whomever stands between Tebow or Greene and the secondary.

Throw in Santonio Holmes as the single wingback in the ?single wing,? and Holmes can play the role of Demaryius Thomas getting single coverage, if/when Tebow fakes a handoff and musters a reasonably accurate throw.

The point is that the Jets are smart enough to know that the teams they?ll face in six out of 16 games are smart enough to know how to defend the Wildcat and/or the TeBone.? With Mark Sanchez leaving the field and Tebow entering from the sideline (unless the big secret is that the Jets plan to use Tebow as a fullback or tight end in the base offense), the Jets need a genuine element of surprise.

The surprise could be that, once Tebow enters the game, the offense that opposing defenses see will be nothing like what they expected to see.

(AP) ? The carnage in Afghanistan continued unabated on a major Muslim holiday on Sunday, as attackers killed two pairs of brothers with links to the government and three NATO service members.

The targeted killings are part of a spate of similar attacks on those associated with the government, further complicating efforts by international forces in country to hand over security responsibility to Afghans as foreign combat troops withdraw.

In the first attack, a bomb hidden in a cemetery in the southern province of Helmand killed a police chief and his brother who were visiting a family grave for the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Seven of the men's family members were wounded in the early-morning blast in the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah, said Helmand Deputy Police Chief Ghulam Rabbani.

No one immediately claimed responsibility, but the attack was consistent with the Taliban's strategy to target authorities and others who align themselves with the government or international forces.

The two men were brothers of a lawmaker for Helmand province, Abdulwadood Popal, who was not at the cemetery at the time of the blast. The family was visiting the grave after morning prayers for the holiday, which ends the month-long Ramadan fasting period.

Then in Farah province in the west, gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on the car of an intelligence service official as he was driving home from a family visit, killing him and his brother who worked for the customs service.

Another relative was wounded, provincial deputy police chief Ghulam Ghows Malyar added.

Meanwhile in the east, NATO forces said that three international service members were killed in a bomb attack, without providing further details. At least 41 international troops have been killed so far this month in Afghanistan.

In a speech marking the holiday, President Hamid Karzai condemned the repeated insurgent attacks that took place during Ramadan.

"The enemies of Muslims ... during the holy month of Ramadan treated the nation of Afghanistan cruelly: bombs, explosions in mosques, suicide attacks in mosques," Karzai said.

If the Taliban were not responsible for such attacks, he said, they must disavow them.

"If you are not behind this, it is being done in your name. As Muslims, as Afghans, raise your voice and say that you did not do it," he appealed.

In a message ahead of Eid al-Fitr, Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar instructed his fighters once again to avoid killing or wounding Afghan civilians.

"Employ tactics that do not cause harm to the life and property of the common countrymen," he said in an eight-page message released to news organizations last week. The Taliban have said previously, however, that they do not consider those who collaborate with the government to be civilians.

Targeted killings of Afghan civilians have surged this year, according to the United Nations. Civilian deaths from targeted killings and assassinations jumped 34 percent for the first six months of 2012 to 255 killed, from 190 in 2011, the U.N. said in a report issued earlier this month.

The U.N. report said 1,145 civilians were killed and 1,954 injured during the first half of the year, most of them by militants.

Also on Sunday, officials said that an airstrike by coalition forces in the northeast killed a large group of Taliban fighters and a local insurgent leader. At least two dozen insurgents were killed in the attack in Kunar province, said NATO forces spokesman Maj. Martyn Crighton.

Kunar Gov. Sayed Fazlullah Wahidi said the strike killed as many as 50 insurgents who had massed in a remote area of the province. He said it was not clear why they had gathered.
